First session in Ecos: La Brea

Start as a Western Horse or Dire Wolf, learn the menu and the January 2026 mark-key change, and leave tar and random codes alone.

Ecos: La Brea puts you in Ice Age Los Angeles about 25,000 years ago, in the ecosystem preserved by the La Brea Tar Pits. You are an animal, not a human survivor. The current public description lets you pack as a Dire Wolf, ambush as a Saber-tooth Cat, lock horns as an Ancient Bison, gallop as a Western Horse, or change the landscape as a Columbian Mammoth.

Before you leave the menu

  1. Join from the official Roblox page. The game has been free to play since November 22, 2025.
  2. Start as a Western Horse if you want speed, a map lesson, and the published path to Ancient Bison. Start as a Dire Wolf if you want to hunt and later unlock the Saber-tooth Cat.
  3. Open the left menu and learn where Instincts, bio stats, group, billboard, settings, map, and your Track count sit.
  4. Read the keybinds in settings before you trust an older chart. On January 23, 2026, Ecos Team said the mark-player key is Q by default for new players, and herbivore call 2 no longer marks players. Existing players keep their old binds until they change them.

First ten minutes

  • As a horse, eat plants and watch the horizon. Edible plants pay a small Track reward on a cooldown, and drinking at a mineral lick is its own mission.
  • As a wolf, use scent (B on the published keyboard list) and look for game trails. Flat-headed Peccaries are tied to those trails, and killing one is the Saber-tooth Cat badge.
  • Do not stand in tar. A short step can be safe. Staying on tar slows you and then traps you. A trapped animal cannot free itself. Sleeping to respawn kills you and leaves a carcass.
  • If you have a survival score you want to keep, leave with the menu return (L on the published list). That starts a 10-second countdown. You cannot menu out while bleeding or in combat.

What to do next

Mark a predator as a Western Horse to work on the Ancient Bison badge. Kill a Peccary as a carnivore for the Saber-tooth Cat. When you can survive a long walk, start the mammoth quest from a mammoth skeleton and follow the fossil zones the quest marks. Coat shopping can wait until you understand which animal you actually play.

What this first session is not

There is no confirmed reward-code box. There is no published growth ladder from baby to elder for these animals. Orcutt's Coyote and Harington's Pony have official fauna pages and were announced as playables in development. Do not hunt for a secret menu entry for them until the game itself shows an unlock.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ecos: La Brea free?

Yes. The official Free to Play video says the experience became free to play on Roblox on November 22, 2025. Open the Ecos Team game page and press play. Older pages that still say the game costs Robux describe an earlier access period.

Which animals can I play right now?

The Roblox game description names Dire Wolf, Saber-tooth Cat, Ancient Bison, Western Horse, and Columbian Mammoth. Horse and Dire Wolf are the animals used in the published unlock steps for the others. Smilodon, Ancient Bison, and Columbian Mammoth have their own badges. Orcutt's Coyote and Harington's Pony were announced on June 29, 2026 as upcoming playables after the emotes update. October 2026 community clips describe them on testing servers, and a public unlock quest for them was not documented.

Are there working codes?

No code string was confirmed as active for October 2026, and a code-entry button was not confirmed in the game. Tracks, the coat currency, are earned by missions, Instincts, survival, and territory or migration play. Do not enter passwords or payment details into any box that claims to be a code field.

How do I unlock the Saber-tooth Cat, Ancient Bison, and Mammoth?

The Saber-tooth Cat badge is earned by hunting and killing a Peccary. The Ancient Bison badge is earned by marking a predator, which the animal guide describes doing as a Western Horse. The Columbian Mammoth badge is earned by completing the mammoth quest: interact with a mammoth skeleton so fossil zones appear, then collect the fossils in those zones. Video pin lists are examples, because players report the marked spots are not one permanent map.

What are Tracks?

Tracks are the currency used to buy animal coats. The published shop ladder is Default free, Tier 1 at 300, Tier 2 at 500, Tier 3 at 1000, and Tier 4 at 3000. Some mutation coats are listed at other prices, including 395. Repeating carnivore and herbivore missions have about a one-hour cooldown. Territory, migration, and the separate daily Instinct board do not use that same hour lock.
